Some would say you’d have to be crazy to be out of bed and on your bike at 5 in the morning. As a member of The 3 Club if you’re not on your bike at that time you’ll most likely be in the swimming pool or pounding the streets in your running shoes. At Men’s Passion we don’t say crazy - we say inspirational.
Founded at the beginning of this year as Kuwait’s first triathlon training club, The 3 Club and its members have quickly established themselves the most dynamic private athletics club in the country.
The 3 Club organised Kuwait’s first triathlon in April (if you missed that one don’t worry, they’re holding another in October), they have a club room and training facility at Marina Waves, and there’s a waiting-list to join - they’ve proved not only could they talk the talk, but they’ve walked the walk.
According to 3 Club coach, Daniel Marton, people join for different reasons. Some to get fit, some to lose weight, and some to get the discipline to reintroduce physical activity in to their lives. Whatever their initial reason for joining, they ultimately end up sharing one common aim; “To compete in a triathlon”, says Daniel.
And the thought of racing is a really rather compelling one. “All of our members are competitive”, he continues, “they compete against themselves as much as they do against their fellow members, and their number one target is to improve their own fitness and their own performance”.
As a coach Daniel concedes that his work is made easier by having a truly motivated membership. The club was founded by triathletes Ahmed Al-Majed and Raba’a Al-Hajri, and as Daniel says “everyone in the club is now pushing themselves to catch up with them”.
The three disciplines that come together to make up a triathlon - swimming, cycling and running - demand a level of all-round fitness and muscle toning that is not replicated in any other sport.
Every new member will have been assessed in terms of general fitness - but Daniel, Ahmed and Raba’a are not solely looking for the already super-fit, they’re also looking for a commitment to training and ultimately competing.
“Typically though”, Daniel says, “those who come to The 3 Club already have a good core fitness level. They come to us because we provide the right environment and regime to help them train to a level where they can compete”.
He’s not teaching anyone how to swim, or how to ride a bike, but he is there to hone the skills they already have and to show them how to swim, ride, and run more efficiently and therefore faster.
The 3 Club takes a holistic approach to training. They advise on the correct fuel for the athlete’s body - on more than one occasion Coach Daniel has gone shopping with club members to help them make healthy choices.
The end result of physical training and a healthy diet of course has benefits out of competition too. Club members agree that the benefits show through in terms of higher energy levels in all other aspects of their lives.
The 3 Club is not alone in recognizing the benefits - Viva Telecom have recently joined forces with them by adopting these health initiatives and making them a reality.
It’s difficult to think of a reason not to want to join them. And take our word for it - once you’re over the psychological hurdle of getting out of bed early in the morning the rest is easy!
The 3 Club will hold its second triathlon, Flying Start 2, on 29th October. For further information on this and general information on The 3 Club email info@the3club.com
